Look, but don’t touch. That’s the message from marine biologists as Southern California sees an influx of jellyfish-like creatures known as Velella velella, or By-the-Wind Sailors. On Saturday, Dana Wharf Whale Watching posted a video of the strange blue and purple-ish blobs that travel with the ocean currents and winds. Beachgoers say they are washing ashore by the thousands along the Southern California coast, including at Huntington Beach, Zuma Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Salt Creek Beach. They have also been spotted further north.By-the-Wind sailors are seen at Zuma Beach in California in April 2023. The California roll is a staple at sushi restaurants around the U.S. No matter where you order it, you'll find pretty much the same three ingredients — cucumber, avocado and crab (sometimes imitation crab) — rolled up in seaweed and rice. The roll's provenance isn't as well known as its ingredients, but the most widely accepted origin story takes us pretty far from California — and more than 4,500 miles from Japan, for that matter. The California roll is widely reported to have originated in Vancouver, Canada. Hidekazu Tojo came to Vancouver in the early '70s and started working at one of the city's only sushi restaurants, reports Food52. At that time, the average diner liked tempura and teriyaki dishes, but wasn't really interested in raw fish, Tojo told the publication. Is the rain finally over for California? People were interested, however, in eating cooked crab. So he crafted the roll using cooked crab, avocado and cucumber. The other thing Tojo did to cater to dine...Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off this weekend

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A 78-year-old woman with two past bank robbery convictions faces new charges after authorities allege she handed a teller a note that said “I didn’t mean to scare you” during a recent Missouri heist.Bonnie Gooch is jailed on $25,000 bond after she was charged with one count of stealing or attempting to steal from a financial institution in the holdup Wednesday in Pleasant Hill, The Kansas City Star reports. No attorney is listed for her in online court records. She also was convicted of robbing a California bank in 1977 and one in the Kansas City suburb of Lee’s Summit in 2020. Her probation in the second heist ended in November 2021. Court documents filed in Cass County in the latest case said the robbery note demanded “13,000 small bills,” adding “thank you sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” Surveillance video also captured her banging on the counter, asking the teller to hurry, Cass County prosecutors said. She smelled strongly of alcohol when officers s...Sinead Farrelly back in soccer in time for shot at World Cup

AUSTIN, Texas. (AP) — Sinead Farrelly says she wouldn’t have been able to play soccer again if she hadn’t told her story. In 2021, Farrelly and fellow player Mana Shim accused former National Women’s Soccer League coach Paul Riley of misconduct and sexual coercion in an article published by The Athletic. The allegations, which he denied, rocked the women’s game, sparking a pair of investigations by U.S. Soccer and the NWSL that concluded there was widespread player mistreatment. Farrelly retired more than six years ago but returned over the weekend to the game she loves, starting for Ireland on Saturday in an exhibition match against the U.S. national team. She also signed this season with NJ/NY Gotham after joining the NWSL team in the preseason as a non-roster invitee. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it unless I was able to get that off my chest and get that story out because that healing, and the liberation from that had to occur before I could ever...Brewers acquire LHP Sousa from Reds, send him to Triple-A

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Brooks Koepka held steady in the cold air and was potentially spared a big number by the rain-softened grass at Augusta National, finishing the third round at the Masters on Sunday morning with a 1-over 73 to keep a two-shot lead over Jon Rahm. But it’s no longer a two-man race. The final round will not have Tiger Woods in his Sunday red shirt, either.Woods never made it back to the course after enduring a miserable mix of cold and rain on Saturday. He withdrew with what he said was a recurrence of plantar fasciitis, the second time in his last three majors that he made the cut without making it to the finishing line.Koepka has been atop the leaderboard after all three rounds, yet his work is far from over. Rahm had his chances to catch him until three-putt bogeys on both par 5s on the back nine, settling for a 73 that puts him in the final group.Viktor Hovland was only three shots behind after a wild 70 that illustrated how quickly it can change at Augusta ...El covid-19 puede haberse originado en humanos, afirma un científico chino
