These California cities saw home prices triple. Then what happened?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 12:06:24 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – When the pandemic hit, California's already insane housing market somehow got even crazier. By 2022, at least 13 major U.S. cities had seen home values go up by more than 200% – i.e. triple – since 2000. The top six of that batch were all in California. But the past year has been different. As the Fed has worked to tamper inflation, interest rates have gone up (and up and up), and the over-asking bidding wars may have reached a ceasefire. Some California homes were even starting to sell below asking price (gasp!) amid the cooling market. California homes are selling below asking price: Can you bid low? What happened in those California cities that saw their home prices triple in just about 20 years? Real estate brokerage Clever checked back on the data in 2023 and found that home prices there have largely been staying pretty flat. In one city, they're even going down. San Francisco, for example, had a typical home value of $356,800 in 2000. It shot up to $1.4 million in...

Pollution lawsuit could curb use of aerial fire retardant

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 12:06:24 GMT

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A legal dispute in Montana could drastically curb the government’s use of aerial fire retardant to combat wildfires after environmentalists raised concerns about waterways that are being polluted with the potentially toxic red slurry that’s dropped from aircraft.A coalition that includes Paradise, California — where a 2018 blaze killed 85 people and destroyed the town — said a court ruling against the U.S. Forest Service in the case could put lives, homes and forests at risk. An advocacy group that’s suing the agency claims officials are flouting a federal clean water law by continuing to use retardant without taking adequate precautions to protect streams and rivers. The group, Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics, requested an injunction blocking officials from using aerial retardant until they get a pollution permit. The dispute comes as wildfires across North America have grown bigger and more destructive over the past two dec...

Aaron Boone had positive, if minor, news regarding Carlos Rodon’s rehab prior to the Yankees’ series finale against the Blue Jays, as the southpaw played catch Sunday.Rodon has been sidelined since suffering a left forearm strain early in spring training, but a “barking” back recently delayed the pitcher for a few days. Boone has said that tests, including a CT scan, have come back “pretty normal.” On Sunday, Boone added that Rodon’s back is “fine,” and the Yankees hope for him to continue his throwing program this week before eventually moving to a bullpen session.“Hopefully the back continues to subside,” Boone said. “But I don’t think it’s anything major, like structurally or from a test standpoint.“He hasn’t lost a lot of throwing time. So he should get right back into that as soon as he can get through this.”Rodon, the Yankees’ biggest addition of the offseason, joined th...
