Albany PD swears in six new officers

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany Police Department swore in six new officers on Monday. Police Chief Eric Hawkins said the new hires come at a time when recruitment for law enforcement is down across the country.The police chief said the new members will help relieve some of the pressure current officers are facing. "We are still doing what needs to be done as responding to calls for service, but officers are working a lot harder, they are working a lot more. So by getting more officers in the department right now, it allows us to remove some of the workload from the existing officers we have."The new hires will now head to the academy and are expected to be in the field within the next eight months.

ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri USO therapy K-9 was named America's Hero Dog. THe European Blue Great Dane's name is Maverick. He took home the top prize for his inspiring work supporting the US military.Maverick's lifesaving work at the Fort Leonard Wood USO includes staying with service members on suicide watch, escorting children to military funerals for their parents, and helping men and women cope with trauma, injuries, and stress.This is the 13th year for the hero dog awards, which celebrate the country's most courageous canines.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Protestors were in front of the St. Charles Boeing Plant Monday morning over the war munitions being manufactured here. ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- As we prepare to celebrate Veterans Day this weekend, the city of St. Charles is introducing the hometown hero banner initiative. It allows residents to pay tribute to their loved ones who have served or are currently serving in the military.The ceremonial hanging of the very first hometown heroes banner took place this morning at the intersection of 5th Street and First Capitol Drive. After weeks of Denver City Council members flexing their budget-oversight muscles to push for millions of dollars more for emergency rental assistance next year, they reached a compromise Monday with Mayor Mike Johnston.The council unanimously approved a budget amendment that will make $13.5 million more available for rental assistance in the 2024 budget.The amendment brings the total proposed set-aside for that program to $29.1 million, including Johnston’s prior commitment last month to add $3 million more than he’d originally budgeted to that cause. Loveland police officer arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting 15-year-old while on duty

A former Loveland Police Department officer was arrested Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl while on duty in late July.Dylan Miller, 28, is accused of kidnapping, sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, unlawful sexual conduct by a peace officer, sexual assault, official oppression and misconduct, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.Miller was fired from the department on Monday, Police Chief Tim Doran said at a news conference.The girl reported the assault to police on Oct. 23, and Miller was placed on administrative leave when he reported for his next shift on Oct. 27. The sheriff’s office conducted the investigation.According to the sheriff’s office, Miller first contacted the girl and several other people during a traffic stop in late July. Shark activity leads to beach closure in Orange County

Officials in Huntington Beach made the call to close a two mile stretch of coastline after beachgoers spotted a whale suffering from what appeared to be bite marks that had washed ashore.  The approximately 400 pound, 7.5 feet long pygmy sperm whale was found at around 3:45 p.m. near Tower 22 in Sunset Beach. The whale, which was still alive, was in clear distress.  When experts from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, including Dr. Alissa Deming, responded to the area and examined the pygmy whale, one of the bites appeared to be from a shark.  “When we started assessing the animal, it was clear that it had what appeared to be a fresh bite wound potentially from a shark on the side of its face,” Deming told KTLA’s Chip Yost.  That information combined with later reports that people may have seen the shark attack the whale prior to it washing ashore led to the temporary closure of a mile stretch on either side of Sunset Beach.  A 400 pound, 7.5 foot long pygmy whale...
