(AP) — Jesper Fast deflected in a shot by Jesperi Kotkaniemi at 7:09 of overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a series-ending 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.Fast’s deflection while shielding Akira Schmid set off a celebration for the Hurricanes, who never led until the final play and twice trailed by a goal before winning the best-of-seven series 4-1 to reach the Eastern Conference final.In the first tight game of the second-round matchup, Fast made amends for when he popped a puck over the goal in front of an open net in the first period. A former D.C. police lieutenant is now indicted on a second-degree murder charge after he said he shot a trainee accidentally with his revolver.Retired D.C. police Lieutenant Jesse Porter Jr. shot Maurica Manyan in the chest on Aug. 4 and she later died, court documents said. Porter conducted the training as a private contractor.It happened after a training exercise for library police officers that the 25-year-old mother attended.After the exercise at the Anacostia Library, Porter’s training group was posing for a photo when Manyan interrupted them to fix her hair and face mask, the documents said. Police are investigating a shooting and a fire at a home in Fort Lauderdale involving a barricaded subject.Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue units responded to a home in the area of Northwest 27th Terrace and 18th Court, just before 8:25 p.m., Thursday.Police said they responded in reference to a shooting, but upon arrival, the armed subject barricaded himself inside the residence and is believed to have set it on fire.SWAT negotiators have also arrived at the scene and continue to speak to the subject in the hopes of reaching a peaceful resolution.Firefighters have put out the flames, but the investigation is expected to go late into the night.Detectives have not provided further details about the incident, as they continue to investigate.Please check back on WSVN.com and 7News for more details on this developing story.

Dangerous items were discovered inside students’ backpacks at three Broward County schools, district officials said.According to Broward County Public Schools, officials found a knife and two airsoft guns on Thursday.The weapons were found at Sea Castle Elementary in Miramar, Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K-8 and Falcon Cove Middle in Weston.Each student will be disciplined in accordance with the district’s Code Book for Student Conduct.
